1. Partner Accommodation and Dual Career Appointments
From: Edmund Bertschinger [edbert_at_MIT.EDU]

[The August 27, 2010 issue of AASWomen newsletter introduced MIT's opening discussions on endorsements of the Pasadena Recommendations. Since that issue, discussions have progressed ? -- Eds.]

The AAUP has prepared a new set of "Recommendations on Partner Accommodation and Dual Career Appointments",

http://www.aaup.org/AAUP/comm/rep/dual.htm

This document provides extensive background and detailed recommendations expanding on the Pasadena Recommendation that institutions "Develop policies encouraging flexible means of accommodating dual-career couples." The AAUP acknowledges that procedures permitting dual-career appointments affect the faculty responsibility for personnel decisions. As they note, "Respect for faculty governance, however, must be balanced against the competing demands of gender equity and work-family balance, which require sensitivity to the needs of dual-career couples."

The tension between faculty governance and dual-career appointments was the reason why my department made only a qualified endorsement of the corresponding Pasadena Recommendation. The AAUP Recommendations provide an opportunity to re-engage the faculty and administration in discussion about this subject of growing importance.
